Chemical properties

Molybdenum does not react with HCl and _{H2 SO4} up to 80 °C. Nitric acid, aqua regia dissolves it only at 100 °C. It is resistant to cold alkalis, but soluble in hot ones. Its qualities are greatly altered by impurities of _O2, Al, _N2, Fe, Si, C, P, S, and Ca in thousandths of a percent. Oxygen is considered the most harmful impurity. Its presence up to 0.004% can lead to a sharp increase in brittleness. At higher oxygen content (more than 0.015%), Mo practically loses its ability to pressure-treat due to loss of plasticity.
