Production of nickel-based alloys

Nickel and nickel-based alloys Production of nickel-based alloys

To get an idea of how diverse the production of nickel-based alloys is, it is enough to get acquainted with their huge assortment. To date, the production of nickel-based alloys includes more than 3,000 grades. Among these are structural, jewelry, and thermo-electrode alloys. Let us take a look at some of them.

Nichrome

Alloys based on nickel. and chromium - nichrome Х15Н60, Х20Н80 are indispensable in modern electrical engineering. The most popular composition with 80% Ni is Kh20N80, which until recently was the most heat-resistant material. In order to make nichrome cheaper, the high percentage of Ni was reduced by increasing the proportion of iron. The most successful was the composition of 15% Cr, 60% Ni, and 25% Fe. The resistance of nichrome is higher than that of ferronichrome, so the latter is usually used at lower temperatures. Ferronichromes and nichromes have a rare combination of high electrical resistance (1.05-1.40 Ohmxmm2/m) and high heat resistance. Therefore they, together with chromates, represent the two most important classes of alloys used in the form of ribbon or wire for the manufacture of high-temperature electric heaters. Nichromes alloyed with up to 1.5% silicon, rare-earth, alkali-earth metals are usually used for this purpose. The maximum operating temperature of this nichrome type is close to 1200 ° C, and for some brands - to 1250 ° C.

Fechral

The X23Yu5T grade also has a very high electrical resistance. This material has all the above advantages typical of nichrome. But fechral is a cheaper iron-chromium-aluminum alloy, and nichrome is an expensive chromium-nickel alloy...

Nickel can also be part of such jewelry material as white gold. On our site you can see and buy any semi-finished non-ferrous and stainless steel rolled products in a wide range of sizes, or order the production according to individual drawings.

Production

The production of nickel-based alloys depends on the initial raw material. For example, to work with magnesia ores, electric smelting is used. This is primarily due to the fact that this ore is refractory. Also, the hydro-metallurgical method is often used in production. In this case, the stages of nickel production include the effect of various alkalis and acids on the raw material. Consumption of the metal grows every year, and nickel is no exception.

Today, the production of nickel-based alloys is unimaginable without the oxygen scavenging remelting process. This method provides optimum dissolution of the alloying elements contained in the charge. It should be taken into account that smelting without oxidation in arc furnaces results in carburizing of metal by electrodes, which requires a minimum initial carbon content. Such production limits the use of high-alloy waste and forces to include in the charge composition low-carbon and purified from impurities phosphorus and sulfur raw materials, which increases the cost of the final product. Many nickel-based alloys are called "superalloys" because their excellent properties are very highly valued in the aerospace industry and are also widely used as power plant components.
