History

Iron and copper have been served to humanity for many centuries. Nickel have been served not more than for 250 years. Having produced copper ore, residents of Saxony met such an unknown rock that was ungiving to a process of smelt. This metal was identified in 1751 by Swedish metallurgist Axel Cronstedt, who had considered nickel as a semi-metal. Materials that were similar by its properties to non-metals and metals were called semi-metals. Initially, nickel was desirable only for juwellers. It was impossible to use it in a production sector because of sulfur additives. With a begging of XX century and an appearance of new technologies, a brilliance of nickel could outshine silver and gold.

A long-nurtured dream of metallurgists to manufacture multifarious grades of stainless steel finally came true.

Properties

Nickel is very hard, touch, malleable metal. It is easy to work down. It is being covered with a protective oxidation film that prevents its corrosion in air at a normal temperature. Nickel tube can withstand gaseous, liquid, aggressive environment and heating up to a temperature of 850 °C. There are possible to produce various types of a tube (rolling, lathe work, bending) due to a high plasticity. The only demerit of alloy is a sulfur additive, which can create a sulphide film on a surface of equipment, making an alloy more brittle at high temperatures.

Manufacture

Nickel pipes can be manufactured of various diameters. They can be delivered rolled into coils or just straight. A cross-section can be round, rectangular, oval, equiangular triangle, square, and buckled equilateral polygon with a constant wall thickness throughout a length. Products of such types can have rounded corners throughout a length. Nevertheless, they relate to tubes, because an outward and inward cross-section has a similar orientation and concentric shape. A surface can be polished or can have an additional cover. Upon request, a pipe can have a thread, coil camber, flanges, baffles, rings on ends. It can be also drilled and expanded. It can be tapered for higher and harden pressure-tight jointed with a help of bolts or pins.

Application

Used in a manufacture of condensing units. In a chemical industry such tubes serve for transportation of aggressive substances (for example for transportation acids and alkalis, because nickel does not acidify in contact with them). Nickel pipe 201 is also used in producing hydrogen. Insofar as Ni is stable to effect of a fume and acid corrosion, it is needed in a manufacture of tools for chemical, food processing and paper-making industry. It is also needed in a producing the steam condensers and injection needles.
