Alloys

Alloying

Alloying has a multidimensional effect on the quality of steel. Chromium increases hardness and corrosion resistance. Nickel makes the alloy ductile; tungsten makes it hard and red-hot. Vanadium increases strength, impact and abrasion resistance; cobalt increases heat resistance and magnetic permeability. Molybdenum makes the alloy red resistance, strength and prevents oxidation at high temperature. Manganese content above 1% increases impact strength, wear resistance. Titanium increases stability, corrosion resistance; aluminum, scale resistance; niobium, acid resistance. Copper increases ductility and prevents rusting. High-quality steel, in addition to the above components, contains boron, zirconium, selenium and nitrogen.

Production

Alloys are melted in an open arc furnace. The use of special additives gives the material valuable qualities - it increases the strength, resistance to shock and vibration, wear resistance and heat resistance. Alloy steel has balanced technological characteristics, due to which it is so popular. Excellent mechanical and technological properties coupled with economic feasibility have allowed to expand the use of this material to almost all known industries. At the same time, alloyed steel itself is conditionally divided into the following groups:

-low alloyed steel contains up to 3% of alloying additives

-Medium alloyed steel contains up to 10% of alloying additives;

-Highly alloyed steel contains more than 10% alloying additives.

Use of

Chromium steels are the most popular steels. They are distinguished by hardness, wear and corrosion resistance, and are relatively inexpensive. They are widely used as a structural material in transport engineering, aviation and arms manufacture. Manganese steels are notable for their wear resistance. G13 steel is unusually wear-resistant and is used for the tracks of tractors or tanks. Silicon and chromium-silicon steels have exceptional hardness and elasticity. Nickel steels are highly ductile and have increased electrical resistance along with exceptionally hard tungsten alloys. The latter are indispensable for metal tooling and percussive drilling. Titanium imparts lightness, corrosion resistance, it is the material of choice for underwater shipbuilding and supersonic aircraft.
