Stainless steel categories

Depending on the microstructure, there are five categories of stainless steel. These are ferritic, austenitic, martensitic, heat-resistant and duplex.

Austenitic grades.

They are non-magnetic, contain chromium, and about 18% Ni. The presence of the latter greatly increases corrosion resistance. It is these steels that are most widely used. They resist oxidation better at high temperatures due to the higher content of chromium, 20-25% and nickel. They can be used in furnace structures, furnaces, and muffle furnaces. They are better known as heat-resistant steels. Approximately 95% of all steel grades are of the austenitic and ferritic grades.

Ferritic grades.

These are classified as magnetic grades. They do not have a very high carbon content, and the proportion of chromium is at about 13-17% Cr. It is considered to be the main alloying element. Such grades are used for making products operating in aggressive oxidizing environments (for example in solutions of HNO3, H3 PO4) in ammonia solutions, in ammonium nitrate , etc. in food and light industry, as well as in power industry for heat-exchange equipment. The 400 series steels are of this type.

Duplex stainless steels.

They have a mixed ferritic-austenitic structure. The chromium content is 18% to 28%, with nickel at 4.5% to 8%. If there is an environment with high chloride content, the duplex grades will find application here.

Martensitic grades.

These too are magnetic, and include about 12% Cr and not very high carbon levels. They can be hardened by quenching and tempering in the same way as plain carbon steels. They are most commonly used in cutting tools, cutlery, medicine, and general mechanical engineering. If the steel is hardened, it contains about 17% chromium with the addition of nickel, niobium and copper alloying. Because of their high strength and wear resistance, they are indispensable in the manufacture of mine pumps, valve spindles and components for the space industry.

The main grades

Martensitic grades of 400 series (typical grade is AISI 410). Their chromium content is usually 12-18%, It is a magnetic grade. It is usually strengthened by high temperature treatment. It is used for connecting parts, fasteners and industrial pumps.

AISI 430 (Ferritic grade).

This is the magnetic grade. It contains from 12 to 18% Cr, "small" carbon. Low temperature machining of the material is used. The main area of application is interior decoration, household appliances, kitchen utensils.

AISI 304 (Authentic) 200/300.

This steel grade is non-magnetic, it has 8-25% nickel and 17-25% chromium. This steel is not strengthened by high temperatures. During operation at low temperatures it does not lose its high strength. If there is a small, up to 7% share of molybdenum it helps to increase corrosion resistance. Most popular application: food and chemical equipment, architectural solutions.

AISI 17-4 (Dispersion Strengthened, hardened grade).

Contains chromium and nickel, as well as additives up to 3-4% copper. In addition they usually contain cobalt and niobium. They are distinguished by their martensitic or austenitic structure. During heat treatment they can be strengthened by dispersion hardening. Used mainly for valves and actuators in petrochemical equipment.

AISI 2205 (Duplex grade).

It contains 4-7% nickel, 18-25% chromium, and 4% Mo. They have higher resistance to corrosion under pressure (stress) than austenitic grades. At the same time their stiffness is higher than that of ferritic alloys. They are most commonly used in pipelines, boilers, high-pressure chambers, in the manufacture of shafts and power transmissions.
