Physical and chemical properties

Tantalum is a metal of grey-steely color with a blueish tint. It is resistant in air at standard conditions. It starts oxidizing at a temperature higher than 200 °C. The main property is its capability to occlude oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen which inconspicuous additives influence on mechanical and electric characteristics. At standard conditions, tantalum occludes hydrogen slowly. With a temperature rise, occluding speed increases. Upon reaching 500 °C, there is noticed maximum occluding speed — when not only adsorption proceeds but hydride formation as well. Occluded hydrogen gives brittleness to metal. But during heating of more than 600 °C in vacuum, almost all H2 starts evolving and there is occurred a recovery of former characteristics.

Tantalum occludes nitrogen up to 600 °C. When temperature is higher than 600 °C, there forms tantalum nitrite that has a melting point of 3087 °C. As long as tantalum is slightly resistant to alkalis, it is bitten by hot solutions of caustic soda and sodium carbonate. In melted alkalis, it starts forming salts of tantalum acid.
