Manufacture has its ramifications. Tungsten is very rare element of lithosphere. It is very hard and insufficiently malleable in standard conditions. Difficulty of its obtaining in pure state and heavy treatment increase cost of final product. Such wire is very heavy.
Tungsten wire is manufactured out of powdered billets that are made in rolling forging rotary machine. There are obtained bars that can be drawn into tungsten wire of diameter 1−3 mm. Wire of smaller diameter is called filament. It can be made with additives of chrome, cobalt, carbon. At that, its strength increases 1.3 times as much. Drawn tungsten wire of WA, WP, WRN gost grades is also manufactured by powder metallurgy method. One kilogram of tungsten can be rolled into filament with length of 3.5 km. It is enough to make 20 000 of bulbs with 60V voltage. It gives a possibility to satisfy a need of electrical engineering all around the world by only two railway carriages of tungsten.
Grade WM is used in X-ray equipment, radioelectronics, for manufacture of heating devices and cathodes of electrical tools that are indented to operate in vibration and impact conditions at a temperature of 2100 °C. Grade WRN is utilized for manufacture of springs, hooks, cathodes of gas-discharge and electronic tools, incoming units, mandrels and other details that do not require tungsten with special additives.
High resistance and unique luminous efficiency allow using thin tungsten filament in glowing lamps. Tungsten wire is used for luminous tools. It is manufactured according to GOST 19 671−91 out of grades WA, WP, WRN, ∅ is 19.5 µm -1.5 mm. There are also manufactured springs of electronic tools, spiral-shaped and non-spiral (looping) cathodes for electrical devices, lattices, heaters. Different filters, lattices made of tungsten wire are used in chemical industry. Such wire is applied for manufacture of surgical tools, rocket parts, airplanes, textile equipment.
